"Blues is the name given to both a musical form and a music genre created primarily within the African-American communities in the Deep South of the United States at the end of the 19th century from spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts and chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads." Preserving the History of American Blues Music

Dear Friends,

I am honored to lead the Blues Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to the preservation of the blues musical heritage. Blues for me is significant because on a historical level it is an unparalleled record of the African- American experience that can be of great value in education.

On a personal level the early blues tradition is an artistic and poignant expression of hard times and great hopes. Its distinctive sound reminds me of the untrammeled spirit of men and woman sharing their daily lives and significantly shaping American musical culture.

This is a story I want to spread. With the time and generosity provided by caring individuals across the world, I trust that this organization can contribute greatly to the mission of promoting the preservation of American blues music.

Sincerely,

Brian K. O'Connor
